Mounting
Mounting refers to the process of securely affixing or attaching a printed graphic, sign, or display to a substrate or surface for display purposes. The method of mounting depends on the type of material used for the graphic and the intended use and environment. Here’s an overview of different mounting methods commonly used for various types of graphics:

Mounting Methods

  1. Gator Board and Ultra Board Mounting:
    • Description: Gator board is similar to foam core but has a denser foam core and is more durable and rigid.
    • Applications: Suitable for mounting large prints, signage, and displays requiring a sturdier backing.
    • Process: Similar to foam core, adhesive or double-sided tape is used to attach the graphic to the board, or it can be inserted into a frame for additional support.
  2. Sintra Board Mounting:
    • Description: Sintra board (or PVC board) is a lightweight yet rigid plastic material.
    • Applications: Used for indoor and outdoor signage where durability and weather resistance are required.
    • Process: Graphics are typically mounted using screws, bolts, or adhesive depending on the size and weight of the graphic. It can also be combined with grommets for hanging.
  3. Acrylic Mounting:
    • Description: Acrylic, also known as Plexiglass, is a transparent plastic material.
    • Applications: Commonly used for high-end displays, photographs, and artwork where clarity and a modern aesthetic are desired.
    • Process: Graphics are sandwiched between two sheets of acrylic using standoffs or bolts for a sleek, frameless look. Alternatively, adhesive can be used for mounting on the backside of the acrylic.
  4. Canvas Stretching:
    • Description: Canvas prints are stretched over a wooden frame to create a gallery-wrap appearance.
    • Applications: Popular for artwork and photographic prints displayed without a traditional frame.
    • Process: The canvas is stretched and stapled onto wooden stretcher bars, ensuring the canvas remains taut and the image wraps around the edges.
  5. Backer Mounting:
    • Description: Backer boards are solid, flat panels used to support and display mounted graphics.
    • Applications: Provides a rigid backing for mounted prints, posters, and artwork for display or framing.‍
    • Process: Graphics are adhered or attached to the backer board using adhesive or mounting hardware. It provides stability and protection against bending or warping.

Considerations for Mounting

  • Surface Preparation: Ensure the mounting surface is clean, dry, and free of dust or debris to achieve strong adhesion.
  • Material Compatibility: Select mounting materials and methods that are compatible with the type of graphic material (e.g., paper, vinyl, fabric).

  • Installation Expertise: Some mounting methods require specialized tools or skills for proper installation, especially for large or heavy graphics.
